Timothy McConaway
When you’re born the son of a hero cop and a paramedic, both tragically murdered in the street before your thirteen year old eyes, you’ve got big shoes to fill and a lot of neurosis to work through. Those were the shoes, though, that Tim McConaway had to step into as he grew up outside of Chicago after the murder of his father, Detective Johnathon McConaway, and his mother, paramedic and Navy reservist Lieutenant Elizabeth Cade. Tim and his twin sister, AJ, were raised by their uncles, Christopher McConaway and Peter Cade, in the northern suburbs of Chicago, from the age of thirteen on, in the wake of their parents’ deaths.
Tim joined the US Air Force out of high school and after his graduation from the Academy was assigned to a base in Kuwait. It was there that his life became very interesting. After tangling with some things that by rights shouldn’t have existed, Tim was recruited into the highly classified UNSETIC (United Nations Supernatural and Extraterrestrial Investigative Corps) by Audrey Thallis, the founding director. His work for UNSETIC saw him partnered with naval officer Brigid O’Connell for many years until his temporary reassignment to special operations. Still later, he was assigned to the Pentagon to oversee operations relating to the Stargate program, of which his sister was a longtime member. It was during this time that he was reunited with his former partner O’Connell, now a Naval reservist and full-time agent of UNSETIC.
Around 2030, Tim settled in New York, near his sister, who was largely retired from field operations with Stargate Command and had begun teaching archaeology and anthropology at NYU. It was during this period that he got word that his best friend (and sister’s fiancee), Matthew O’Brien, might be alive. Tim had made acquaintances with a woman named Sonja during a personal mission to track down his sister, who had gone missing in Europe several months before, and it was a no-brainer for him to recruit the Mage again to help him find his friend. Their success at locating and saving the life of O’Brien also sparked the beginning of a romantic relationship between the former spy and the nonconformist.
Awakening as a Mage
On a trip to Russia, Tim hooked up with a few old friends from his deep cover days. This was about a month after the successful rescue of Matthew O’Brien, which he couldn’t have accomplished without the help of Sonja, a member of the Cult of Ecstasy (Tim, at this time, knew that she was a Mage but she had been careful not to expose him to too much). Tim and two of his old friends shared a bottle of vodka and talked about old times. One of these old friends was a Mage and misjudged the level of drunkeness of both friends–Tim was barely inebriated at the time. The blatant use of magic Awakened Tim well past the time most sleepers wake up, putting him in an awkward position.
Upon his return to the States and his confession to his then-lover, Tim was directed to a doctor named Abdul who shared his philosophical tendencies and agreed to begin teaching him about his new-found talents. There’s some tension, however, given Abdul’s views on Tim’s now-fiancee, Sonja.
Tim is a member of the Celestial Chorus and continues his work with UNSETIC and oversight of Stargate Command.
