Ren Colby

Amaeren Colby Decker — “Ren” to most — was born the daughter of Andrew Decker, Sr. and Captain Margaret Colby, USN on 18 November 1980 (unless my GM tells me otherwise), the third of their eventual six children.  She was twenty-seven years old during the original Bridgefall, when the world went to hell in a handbasket.  She was an MD serving in the US Marine Corps in Germany at the time.  Soon after losing contact with her family in the United States, Ren was assigned to a new project, code named D.E.M.O.N., examining the effects of the phenomenon that began to be reported throughout Europe even as communications began to break down.  By August, only a few months after the original Bridgefall, she had been captured by forces she didn’t understand while doing pro bono medical work in a town near the installation where she had been working.

It was in the gospog fields surrounding a stelae that Ren met her new team for the first time (the “save the world” squad, to quote her journal).  Her world hasn’t been the same since.

Stats and skills

Ren’s skillset largely involves patching up the group of men and women she’s begun traveling with.  With her focus largely on medicine–whether it be first aid or more advanced forms of care–her combat skills have recently left a bit to be desired.  She’s handy enough with a gun and can usually hold her own in a fight, though she’s not what one would call either a crack shot or a scrapper.  Since the Bridgefall, she’s discovered another facet to herself–inner strength.  Even as she continues to discover new things about herself as she explores her war-torn, fracturing world, she remains steadfastedly true to herself (7 adds in Reality).

Her bedside manner leaves a great deal to be desired–probably why the Marine Corps has been such a good fit for her.  “Suck it up, soldier” goes over better with Marines than the same in a civilian hospital.  Being severed from what had passed as “normal” for several months has had an effect on her.  She’s become a bit more thoughtful, a bit better at persuasion over the past several months, whereas before, she would have just spat orders and hoped that no one was insubordinate enough to ignore them.  She’s still rough around the edges, abrasive and sometimes downright bitchy, but some of the worst of it has faded for various reasons.
