idiot.\u00a0 What the hell were you thinking?<\/em>\u00a0 Ezra cursed under his breath again, staring at the mess Brendan had made of his implant and the back of his head.\u00a0 <em>And he\u2019s done this before?\u00a0 How the hell did he survive the first time?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow is he?\u201d\u00a0 America\u2019s voice was quiet.\u00a0 She perched precariously on the edge of the bunk behind him, watching him work while Alana manned the controls.\u00a0 They were in hyperspace, now, headed for an uninhabited system where they could shoot off a message to E-557 before heading to Compact space for Alana\u2019s leg of the mission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot good.\u201d\u00a0 Ezra shook his head slowly.\u00a0 \u201cIf I\u2019d expected him to pull a stunt like this, I\u2019d have brought different equipment.\u00a0 I can\u2019t take it out, not here.\u00a0 I can\u2019t repair it, either.\u201d\u00a0 He sighed.\u00a0 At least the bleeding, for the moment, had stopped for the most part.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t mention that he couldn\u2019t do too much poking around for fear of sparking a bleed he couldn\u2019t stop.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t have the blood supplies to handle that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he going to make it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alana snorted from the pilot\u2019s seat.\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019ll live.\u00a0 He did a worse number on himself the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ezra blinked at Alana\u2019s back.\u00a0 \u201cYou were there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She grunted and didn\u2019t elaborate.\u00a0 Ezra cursed mentally.\u00a0 <em>Would it kill you to open up about what you know sometime, Alana?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>America shook her head slightly and winced.\u00a0 \u201cI can only imagine how much pain he must be in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ezra didn\u2019t say anything.\u00a0 He suspected it was going to get a lot worse.\u00a0 <em>Guess I\u2019m not as brilliant as I think I am sometimes.<\/em>\u00a0 He\u2019d been trying to figure out what had prompted Brendan to do what he\u2019d done.\u00a0 Without being able to ask him or glean it from recent memories\u2014Brendan had been thinking in his native tongues at the time\u2014Ezra could only speculate on <em>why<\/em> it had happened, and that bothered him.<\/p>\n<p>He eased a fresh bandage into place and turned toward America, who smiled wanly at him.\u00a0 He shook his head.\u00a0 \u201cYou look like you haven\u2019t had a good night\u2019s sleep in years, ma\u2019am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A wider smile tugged at the corner of her mouth.\u00a0 \u201cCall me Meri.\u00a0 Most people do.\u00a0 Did, anyhow.\u201d\u00a0 She tucked one leg slowly up underneath the other.\u00a0 \u201cAre you a friend of my daughter\u2019s, too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ezra laughed a little and nodded.\u00a0 \u201cYeah, and as long as I don\u2019t get Brendan killed, I think she\u2019ll still be my friend when we get back.\u00a0 Ezra Grace.\u201d\u00a0 He started to offer her his hand, then grimaced as he remembered it was sticky with Brendan\u2019s blood.\u00a0 He offered her a sheepish smile as he got up to go clean his hands.\u00a0 \u201cSorry.\u00a0 You hungry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>America offered him a wry smile.\u00a0 \u201cAre you offering something other than a protein shake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ezra shrugged.\u00a0 \u201cNot much better, but more solid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I\u2019m starving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded, managing a grin, then ducked into the head to clean up.\u00a0 There was blood all over his shirt.\u00a0 He winced, took it off, then washed his hands and chest before rinsing his shirt in the sink and hanging it up, hoping that he\u2019d gotten the blood out.\u00a0 It was hard to tell in the dim light.\u00a0 After getting some rations from the cargo hold, he returned to the bunks.\u00a0 America was leaning against the back wall of hers, eyes closed.\u00a0 It almost looked like she was meditating, like a Buddhist monk of Old Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Ezra set one of the packets of crackers and dried fruit down by her knee with a water bottle.\u00a0 He sat on the floor and leaned against Brendan\u2019s bunk.\u00a0 Brendan was still out like a light, but his breathing sounded good\u2014deep, even, regular.<\/p>\n<p><em>Let him stay out for a while,<\/em> Ezra decided.\u00a0 If he didn\u2019t wake up on his own in the next hour or two, he\u2019d wake him.\u00a0 Until then, it was better to let him recover from the shock to his system in whatever way his body wanted to recover from it.\u00a0 Ezra had found that was often the best way of dealing with problems like this.<\/p>\n<p>He ripped open his own packet of dried fruit and tossed a few cranberries into his mouth, beginning to chew.\u00a0 America opened an eye and looked at him.\u00a0 \u201cWhere are we going now?\u201d\u00a0 She asked.\u00a0 \u201cBack to E-557?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ezra shook his head.\u00a0 \u201cNot\u2026directly.\u00a0 We still need to pickup your husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She blinked a little, sitting forward slightly.\u00a0 \u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstallation seven seven two niner on Anduril,\u201d Alana answered from the controls.\u00a0 Ezra hadn\u2019t even been aware she was listening to them.\u00a0 Her voice was even, firm, confident.\u00a0 \u201cI think I know <em>exactly<\/em> where they\u2019ll be holding him, in fact.\u00a0 Easy op.\u00a0 I\u2019ll go in, I\u2019ll smack some people around, and I\u2019ll come out with Commander Channing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnduril\u2026that\u2019s a Compact world.\u201d\u00a0 America\u2019s eyes widened.\u00a0 Fear threaded through her voice, dropping soft.\u00a0 \u201cThe Eurydice Compact has him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alana nodded, keeping her eyes on the board.<\/p>\n<p>America made a sound that was half a whimper, half a gasp.\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019s from the Compact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d\u00a0 Alana\u2019s voice was quieter, now.<\/p>\n<p>Ezra stared at the back of her head.\u00a0 <em>Damn, Alana.\u00a0 What <\/em>else<em> have you failed to tell us about?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ll have killed him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Alana said slowly.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t think they have.\u00a0 Not based on what your daughter saw.\u00a0 They won\u2019t kill him if they think he\u2019s important\u2026and I\u2019m pretty sure that\u2019s what they\u2019re thinking.\u201d\u00a0 She stared out the window at hyperspace.<\/p>\n<p><em>How do you know that, Alana?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>America seemed to take her knowledge at face value.\u00a0 \u201cI hope you\u2019re right,\u201d she said softly.<\/p>\n<p>Ezra refrained from saying that he hoped she was right, too.\u00a0 He patted America\u2019s knee.\u00a0 \u201cOur intelligence has reported that he\u2019s alive, at least,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n<p>America nodded slightly, her eyes on Alana\u2019s back.\u00a0 If Alana noticed the stare, she didn\u2019t let on.\u00a0 For a moment, Ezra wondered if she was thinking what he was thinking\u2014how did the former assassin know?\u00a0 What was it that she hadn\u2019t told anyone?<\/p>\n<p>Was that going to get them all killed?<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0 \u25cf\u00a0\u00a0 \u25cf<\/p>\n<p><em>The sky was gray, like steel.\u00a0 The wreckage of his bird burned behind him as he stood on the promontory, watching fire rain out of the sky.\u00a0 Scorched earth.\u00a0 That\u2019s the decision they\u2019d made, apparently.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t care what they did, what they damaged, who they killed. As long as they got the resources, as long as they held the place, it didn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t care about the trees, the animals, many of the species the last of their kind.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t <\/em>care<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>His hands tightened into fists. \u00a0He was powerless, cut off.\u00a0 They were bombing Fort Solace.\u00a0 They were bombing Fort Solace and there was nothing he could do to stop it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2026or was there\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He reached for her, found her.\u00a0 He\u2019d intended to warn her.\u00a0 Instead, everything went black\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2026klaxons wailed.\u00a0 A woman jerked herself away from a console, looking at a man perhaps seven years her senior.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u00a0 Who\u2019s attacking us?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The man shook his head, grasping her by the arm and standing her up quickly.\u00a0 \u201cDoes it matter?\u00a0 They\u2019re attacking the Commonwealth.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c\u2026who would do that?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 We\u2019ve become the new Guard.\u00a0 We\u2019re standing in their way.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBut Padriag\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDid you think I told you to take those people and run for no reason?\u00a0 Get out of here, Miriam.\u00a0 Run.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat about you?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDon\u2019t worry about me.\u00a0 If I get clear, I\u2019ll see you again.\u00a0 If I don\u2019t\u2026well.\u00a0 You\u2019ll figure it out soon enough.\u00a0 Now <\/em>go<em>!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>She cast one last look at him and ran\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Brendan mumbled.\u00a0 His head was pounding.\u00a0 How long had he been having the nightmares?\u00a0 How long had he been out?\u00a0 He wanted to open his eyes but at the same time he didn\u2019t.\u00a0 The <em>light<\/em> would hurt.\u00a0 He remembered that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrendan?\u00a0 You awake, man?\u201d\u00a0 Ezra pried one of his eyes open and shined a light into it.\u00a0 The brightness felt like fire searing his eyeballs into cinders.<\/p>\n<p>Brendan jerked back, swearing and banging his head against the back wall of his bunk.\u00a0 Black swallowed him again, though only briefly.\u00a0 The pain hadn\u2019t ebbed at all when he came to again.<\/p>\n<p>He groaned.\u00a0 The first coherent words he got out were directed at Ezra.\u00a0 \u201cShine a light in my eyes like that one more time and I\u2019m going to take you apart with my bare hands, Ez.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ezra\u2019s laugh was strangled.<\/p>\n<p><em>I must look and sound like hell.<\/em>\u00a0 Thinking a coherent thought was a struggle.\u00a0 \u201cCan you give me something for the pain?\u201d\u00a0 His tongue felt like lead.\u00a0 He kept his eyes squeezed shut, fearing the light.\u00a0 It would <em>hurt<\/em>, and he knew it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, hang on a second.\u201d\u00a0 Ezra rummaged around for a moment before he slapped an analgesic patch on the side of Brendan\u2019s neck, near the bandage that covered where he\u2019d stabbed himself.<\/p>\n<p>Brendan exhaled slowly.\u00a0 It wouldn\u2019t take more than a few minutes for the patch\u2019s effects to kick in.\u00a0 He\u2019d risk opening his eyes once that happened.\u00a0 \u201cHow long was I out?\u201d he mumbled.<\/p>\n<p>Ezra hesitated before answering.\u00a0 \u201cTen hours,\u201d he finally said.\u00a0 \u201cFor a little while I wasn\u2019t sure you were going to wake up at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed weakly.\u00a0 \u201cAnd break a promise to Lin?\u00a0 Fat chance.\u201d\u00a0 <em>She\u2019s going to worry.\u00a0 She\u2019s going to worry a lot.\u00a0 Probably already is, if she felt what happened.<\/em>\u00a0 For a moment, he considered reaching through the bond for her but quickly thought better of it.\u00a0 The pain was enough already without adding strain into the mix.\u00a0 He was fairly certain the nightmares were because of the circumstances, too.\u00a0 Something she\u2019d seen must have leaked across to him in those last seconds before he lost consciousness.\u00a0 \u201cApparently we got clear.\u201d\u00a0 The pain was slowly starting to ebb, but not disappear.\u00a0 He hadn\u2019t expected it to disappear anyway\u2014all he was hoping for was something to take the sharp edges off of it, the stuff that made him feel like his skull was full of razor blades and his body was stretched out on a bed of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah.\u00a0 Alana\u2019s keeping an eye on the controls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m surprised you\u2019d trust me with it, Cho.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brendan had to laugh.\u00a0 \u201cEzra can\u2019t fly, Alana.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey now.\u201d\u00a0 Ezra growled a little.\u00a0 \u201cI can fly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a combat situation with unfamiliar controls and lots of things you could hit.\u00a0 Not to mention getting us into hyperspace?\u00a0 No, Ezra, he\u2019s right.\u00a0 You can\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0 Alana was quiet for a moment.\u00a0 \u201cAre you going to be able to take these back from me on this little jaunt, Brendan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cETA?\u201d\u00a0 <em>I really don\u2019t think I\u2019m going to be in any shape to man the controls inside of the next couple days, but maybe with a little more sleep under my belt and a lot of medication, I could do it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll drop back to realspace in about twelve hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Have we made contact with home?<\/em>\u00a0 \u201cFor correction?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMm.\u00a0 And to shoot a message back to the colony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m not going to be up to taking the controls back before then.\u00a0 Probably not for another twenty-four hours, at least.\u201d\u00a0 He risked opening an eye.\u00a0 The light <em>hurt<\/em>.\u00a0 He squeezed it shut again and took a deep breath before trying again, blinking through tears.\u00a0 A little better, but not much.\u00a0 He groaned.\u00a0 \u201cGuess I did more of a number on myself than I thought,\u201d Brendan mumbled, slowly starting to reposition himself on the bunk.<\/p>\n<p>Ezra shook his head slowly.\u00a0 \u201cWhy did you do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause my implant didn\u2019t have an off switch,\u201d he grumbled.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m pretty sure they were going to try to take control of the ship through my implant.\u00a0 They were catching some readings.\u00a0 I assume they couldn\u2019t understand them because psychics don\u2019t <em>fly<\/em> around here and started to get suspicious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alana glanced at him.\u00a0 \u201cYou flew for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brendan shook his head slightly and winced as his head throbbed harder, making a mental note not to do that again.\u00a0 \u201cThey didn\u2019t know what I was.\u00a0 I was a latent.\u00a0 Crashing on E-557 woke up my abilities.\u201d\u00a0 He looked past Ezra to America, who was sitting on the bunk across from his, arms wrapped around her knees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat happens,\u201d she said softly.\u00a0 \u201cWe used to see it a lot in the Guard.\u00a0 Trauma sometimes can spark latents. \u00a0They\u2019re sometimes stronger than people who were born with their abilities.\u201d\u00a0 She studied Brendan for a long moment.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re Bonded to my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brendan winced.\u00a0 \u201cHow did you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>America smiled faintly.\u00a0 \u201cSome of us can tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His brow furrowed.\u00a0 <em>There\u2019s a lot I don\u2019t know.<\/em>\u00a0 His stomach growled and he groaned.\u00a0 Eating would require sitting up, and he wasn\u2019t sure he could manage that without ending upon the floor or worse.<\/p>\n<p>Ezra shoved a ration packet into his hands.\u00a0 Brendan stared at him.\u00a0 Ezra shrugged.\u00a0 \u201cFigured you\u2019d be hungry when you woke up.\u00a0 Brought extra out when Meri and I ate earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeri?\u201d\u00a0 Brendan asked, confused.\u00a0 <em>Who\u2019s Meri?<\/em>\u00a0 America waved a little at him.\u00a0 <em>Oh.<\/em>\u00a0 \u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiled a little.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re not very fast on the uptake right about now, are you, young man?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish I was, ma\u2019am,\u201d he said quietly.\u00a0 <em>This really isn\u2019t how I envisioned this turning out.\u00a0 I guess it could have gone worse.\u00a0 That girl with the keycard could\u2019ve been a trap. Thank whatever\u2019s out there for the very smallest of favors.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She smiled a little more, looking at the three of them in turn.\u00a0 \u201cSo.\u00a0 Grumpy sent the three of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alana\u2019s brow furrowed and she turned in her chair to look at America.\u00a0 \u201c\u2026Grumpy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdam Windsor.\u00a0 Grumpy.\u00a0 You\u2026don\u2019t know him by that name, do you?\u201d\u00a0 She studied them, especially Brendan, then asked, \u201cHow <em>do<\/em> you know him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He licked his lips, fumbling with the ration packet.\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019s one of the Guardians.\u00a0 Military commanders of the Colony.\u00a0 He\u2019s\u2026ah\u2026my commanding officer, ultimately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally,\u201d there was a bare trace of surprise in America\u2019s voice.\u00a0 \u201cWho\u2019d have thought?\u201d\u00a0 She smiled a little.\u00a0 \u201cWhat about his wife?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brendan almost sat bolt upright.\u00a0 <em>He has a <\/em>wife<em>?<\/em>\u00a0 As it was, barely stopping himself from doing just that sent pain shooting from the back of his neck down his spine and straight through his head.\u00a0 He choked on a groan, putting a hand over his eyes.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t help.\u00a0 \u201cHe has a wife?\u201d\u00a0 He croaked.\u00a0 \u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d\u00a0 America blinked.\u00a0 \u201cMy sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel?\u201d\u00a0 Ezra\u2019s brow furrowed.\u00a0 Even Alana looked shocked, Brendan could see out of the corner of his eye.<\/p>\n<p><em>Even Alana didn\u2019t know that.\u00a0 Interesting.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>America nodded slowly.\u00a0 \u201cYou didn\u2019t know that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Brendan said, almost hollowly.\u00a0 \u201cI lived with her for years.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know.\u00a0 Alana?\u00a0 Did you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alana shrugged a little.\u00a0 \u201cI always figured that Rachel\u2019s private life was Rachel\u2019s private life.\u00a0 I never asked.\u00a0 She was focused on Lindsay, near as I could ever tell.\u00a0 She was more important than anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>America frowned, leaning back.\u00a0 \u201cInteresting,\u201d she murmured.\u00a0 \u201cWell.\u00a0 I guess that\u2019s something I\u2019m going to have to ask them about, then, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ezra nodded slowly.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m guessing so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brendan tried not to yawn, knowing that he shouldn\u2019t be tired.\u00a0 He chewed some of the rations from the packet.\u00a0 His eyelids were heavy, and his eyes stung.\u00a0 \u201cHey, Ez?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, Brendan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He handed back the ration packet.\u00a0 \u201cWake me when we drop back to realspace?\u00a0 If we\u2019re going to make contact, I\u2019d like to be the one to do it, if I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou going back to sleep?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah.\u00a0 My head\u2019s killing me and the patch is only taking the edges off.\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019ll feel better when I wake up.\u201d\u00a0 <em>It\u2019d better feel better when I wake up.<\/em>\u00a0 He squeezed his eyes shut and exhaled, trying to regulate his breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to wake you every hour or so, Brendan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSure thing, Ez,\u201d he mumbled.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t worth fighting.\u00a0 Ezra was his doctor.\u00a0 He\u2019d do whatever he felt was best.\u00a0 \u201cNext time,\u201d Brendan mumbled, \u201cmake sure that my implant has an off switch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ezra laughed weakly.\u00a0 \u201cYeah, sure.\u00a0 Whatever, Brendan.\u201d\u00a0 There wasn\u2019t going to be a next time, and they both knew it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cG\u2019night.\u201d\u00a0 He dropped back to sleep fairly handily and was grateful for the quiet, soothing blackness that closed around him.\u00a0 The dreams, mercifully, didn\u2019t come again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We fear our futures because they are unknown.\u00a0 In truth, there\u2019s no reason to fear your own future until you can see it.\u00a0 Then you fear you can\u2019t change it. &#8212;
