NaNoWriMo 2023 retrospective

So now that I’m a few days removed from NaNo ’23 and have had a little bit of a brain break, time for a little perspective and retrospective on the whole thing.  This year’s NaNo was a little different for me as I was revisiting a very old project that’s been floating out there for years and trying to do something new with it.  in that, I succeeded.

That said, i admittedly didn’t get very far in the draft, but a few things took a bit of a different shape, in part because I shifted from a single, first person point of view (Ky) and spread the POV out across several additional characters, including Hadrian and Jim.

Including Jim in the narrative was something that I’d done in one previous draft and I felt like the narrative was better for it.  There are a couple other things I’ve done with Jim so far in the newest draft that I think work better than what was in the previous.  At some point, maybe I’ll post some kind of side-by-side comparison of the two drafts, but we’ll see.

I shuffled the order of things around across the drafts, had different people doing different things, and some people ended up in either better or worse shape in the NaNo ’23 draft than they had in the previous.

Will this draft hold?  I’m not sure yet.  Are there things that will survive? Entirely likely.

For now, on to other things for a bit.  There’s probably some science fiction in my future that’s long overdue for my attention.
