Prompt for January 22, 2014 – Day 22

Happy Hump Day to all the 9-5ers in the world. Time for another jolt to your creativity.

Prompt type: Music prompt

Prompt:

Song is “Building a Mystery” by Sarah McLachlan. Video courtesy of YouTube.

This particular song is near and dear to my heart because without it, I never would have come up with Hadrian Bridger, one of the main characters in the Lost Angel Chronicles.

Prompt for January 21, 2014 – Day 21

It’s Tuesday, one day closer to Friday.

Prompt for today is something new, something to help you with character development.  Hopefully, it’ll be helpful for some (or all)!

Prompt Type: Character History

Prompt:  Take the main character from your current project (if you have multiple projects or multiple mains, pick the one you feel like you know the least about right now) and imagine what they were doing ten years ago.  Write a scene set in that time period and see where it takes you.

With any luck, you may be able to incorporate what you’ve just learned about your character in your current project.

Prompt for January 20, 2014 – Day 20

Good gracious, how is it already the 20th?

Another day, another prompt.  Really curious to see what folks do with this one, since it was one of those things that came to me a long time ago that I was never able to do anything with beyond a few paragraphs.

Prompt type: Opening line

Prompt:  “Why, All-Father, have you forsaken me?  What was my affront to heaven that has doomed my people?  All-Father, I willingly give myself to you, but I must know!”

My brand-new niece is one week old today.  Happy one week anniversary of your birth, Miss Anna Joan!

Now on to what you’re waiting for — today’s prompt.

Prompt type: Music prompt

Prompt:

Music is “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark” by Fall Out Boy; video courtesy of YouTube. I discovered this song thanks to the 2013 Stanley Cup playoffs, so blame the NHL and NBC for this one!

Prompt for January 17, 2014 – Day 17

It’s a Friday and another new prompt type for folks! This one is a new twist on using Kim Freimoeller’s Inspiration Dice.

Prompt type: Change it up

Prompt: Take a project you’ve already started but maybe gotten blocked on.  Make some changes and see where they take you.

  1. Add a flashback that helps your character understand something either about themselves or about the situation they’ve found themselves in.
  2. Have your characters hit a dead end — and then end up on the run

Prompt for January 16, 2014 – Day 16

Happy Thursday–only two work days left in the week if you’re like me and have a MTWThF day job.

Today’s prompt is a new one, partially inspired by my dearly beloved sister-in-law Natalie, who we joke about wanting to be shipwrecked or otherwise trapped with simply due to what can be found in her purse.

Prompt type: Toolbox

Prompt: Come up with a character who might have the following array of items in a purse, backpack, their trunk, etc–then write a scene in which they use some (or all) of these items to save the day.

  1. Insulin
  2. Two pence, five pennies, a nickel, a pound sterling, and one gold dollar
  3. Dental floss
  4. Sugar-free mint gum
  5. A Swiss Army knife
  6. A cellular phone with 2% battery life left
  7. A D-cell battery
